I believe it’s been busy days for you Mr. Richard and this Halloween will be a wonderful holiday for your family especially a fan day for your kids. I’ve read from a website citing how Jews celebrate Halloween which is fun and a great way to meet the neighbors! Children dress up as sages, princesses, heroes and clowns. They drop by the homes of the community, visit the infirm and the aged, spreading joy and laughter. They bring gifts of food and drink and collect tzedakah for the needy.

Considering the way you celebrate Halloween is much wonderful most especially spending the time together with your dearest family.

Moreover, in case you will need help or anything that you wanted to discuss or share with me, I am just here Mr. Richard.

I was able to see Towers burning from a window in my condo in Passaic. As I watched the news of the day unfold one thought kept coming to me. “It’s time to go home!”. We felt very strongly that this was a message from Hashem that the time had come to go home, to move to Israel. After all, the USA was no longer “safer” then the land of Israel. So we decided we would make the move, to listen to G-d’s message and with us I thought there would be thousands that would also be moving. And thousands did follow over the next 10 years with Nefesh B’Nefesh. In fact it was a few weeks after we made our decision that we saw the very first ad for Nefesh B’Nefesh in the Jewish Press and we contacted them and was one of the lucky few to be on the very first Nefesh B’Nefesh flight.

A few months later, on Tu B’Shvat, we had a very exciting morning. I had just come home from Shul and saw my wife in tears, tears of happiness. She had just found out we would be expecting our second child! As we were celebrating the moment the phone rang. I picked it up and it was the Jewish Agency congratulating us on being officially accepted for Aliyah and that they were looking forward to welcoming us home. It seemed this child was destined to be linked with our move to Israel and Tu B’Shvat in fact has become a very important day in our lives with our 5th child being born on Tu B’Shvat many years later, but that is for another post.

So besides being on the very first NB’N flight we also had another first coming, our child was to be the very first Nefesh B’Nefesh Sabra. The first kid of thousands and B”H many more thousands to come.

I’ll never forget that night our son was born. We were in Sharei Tzeddek in Jerusalem. Jerusalem, the Holiest city on earth! It was a big difference from Paterson, NJ where our first child was born. We had been in the hospital for several hours and were waiting for our son to be born. As the hours and minutes ticked by I kept looking at my watch. And then, after what seemed like days of waiting he was finally born. Official time of birth was 11:45pm September 11th, 2002.

Exactly a year later after the falling of the Twin Towers. It was Hashem telling us, you heard my message, now here is your reward.

Today, September 11th 2012, our son Moishy is 10 years old! He is special needs, has been since birth, and there are no words to describe how great a gift and how much bracha Moishy brings to our lives.

Back in the mid nineties a Jewish advertising executive in New York came up with an idea. What if the New York Times – considered the world’s most prestigious newspaper – listed the weekly Shabbat candle lighting time each week. Sure someone would have to pay for the space. But imagine the Jewish awareness and pride that might result from such a prominent mention of the Jewish Shabbat each week.He got in touch with a Jewish philanthropist and sold him on the idea. It cost almost two thousand dollars a week. But he did it. And for the next five years, each Friday, Jews around the world would see ‘Jewish Women: Shabbat candle lighting time this Friday is .’. Eventually the philanthropist had to cut back on a number of his projects. And in June 1999, the little Shabbat notice and stopped appearing in the Friday Times. and from that week on it never appeared again. Except once. On January 1, 2000, the NY Times ran a Millennium edition. It was a special issue that featured three front pages. One had the news from January 1, 1900. The second was the actual news of the day, January 1, 2000. And then they had a third front page. Projecting future events of January 1, 2100. This fictional page included things like a welcome to the fifty-first state: Cuba. As well as a discussion as to whether robots should be allowed to vote. And so on. And in addition to the fascinating articles, there was one more thing. Down on the bottom of the Year 2100 front page, was the candle lighting time in New York for January 1, 2100. Nobody paid for it. It was just put in by the Times. The production manager of the New York Times – an Irish Catholic – was asked about it. His answer was right on the mark. And it speaks to the eternity of our people. And to the power of Jewish ritual.”We don’t know what will happen in the year 2100. It is impossible to predict the future. But of one thing you can be certain. That in the year 2100 Jewish women will be lighting Shabbos candles.
